Make two pieces, due two weeks from today, September 6th:

A).  A continuation of work you were making last year or over the summer; in this case the goal is to re-engage your practice after the break on terms familiar to you and to acclimate your work habits to the new studio surroundings.

B).  A departure from your previous work into new territory using a medium you are unfamiliar with. The word “medium” is as broad as the realm of all possible materials and languages, etc.

In both cases, the projects should not be so involved as to prohibit their completion within the allotted time.  They should be “finished,” but can also be thought of as sketches for possible work to come.  The purposes of this assignment are to 1) quickly establish momentum going into this first semester of thesis 2), acquaint the faculty and each other with the current state of your practice, and 3) open the space for new avenues of exploration.

Be prepared to discuss during your crit the context of these pieces in light of your previous practice and your thoughts for the future.
